Kambria Gabrielle Darby, a 26-year-old woman, was charged with child neglect after her son was seen in a Walmart in Mississippi wearing only a diaper amid freezing temperatures.
The incident, which occurred on January 17, 2024, led to Darby’s arrest and subsequent release on bond conditions ordered by the Hinds County Youth Court. The child was evaluated by EMS crews and later released to an approved relative.
A police officer could be also seen walking behind the child’s mother as she left the store. Officers learned that the child who was still shaking from the cold had been dressed by other shoppers in the store, WAFB reported.
Police then arrested the mother, and placed the child in a warm police car. The 2-year-old was evaluated by first responders, and Child Protective Services later released him to an approved relative, the outlet reported.
The woman was booked into the Hinds County Detention Center.
The case has garnered significant attention, with a video of the incident posted on social media, leading to a viral confrontation and subsequent arrest. Darby has defended her actions and parenting on social media, while her family has spoken out, expressing hope to return to their life prior to the incident.
The child’s well-being and the circumstances surrounding the incident have been the focus of public concern and legal proceedings.
