Witnesses on Monday shared what they saw of the intense chase between the police and the suspect in the deadly shooting inside the Ateneo de Manila University over the weekend.
Rose Frugal first crossed paths on claims of illegal drug trafficking and corruption years ago. He revealed the intense resentment the politics had for the gunman, Chao Tiao Yumol.
On Sunday, July 24, inside the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, Yumol officially admitted to shooting Furigay and numerous other people. Furigay’s daughter, who is graduating from law school, was among those injured in addition to the two other people he killed.
He said that a black-clad man approached him in his Quezon City home and struck him in the face with a hard item, causing him to fall to the ground. The man yelled at Yumol, “This is your last warning from the Furigays,” stating, “LAST WARNING MO NA YAN GALING SA MAG-ASAWANG FURIGAY.”

Chao-Tiao Yumol, a 38-year-old doctor from Lamitan, Basilan, was arrested on Sunday after three people were shot dead in the Ateneo campus on Sunday, just as its law school was about to hold its graduation ceremony. Killed were former Lamitan mayor Rose Furigay, Furigay’s aide Victor Capistrano, and Ateneo security guard Jeneven Bandiala.
In addition, he also asked to look into Furigay’s suspected involvement in drug trafficking in a number of his Facebook posts. He also requested assistance from former president Rodrigo Duterte as his administration waged war on illicit drugs.
Yumol evidently premeditated the assassination and decided to handle justice himself when his pleas for assistance and persistent exposés remained unanswered. Yumol found the ideal murder scene at the Ateneo Law students’ graduation ceremony on Sunday, July 24.
Furigay’s daughter Hannah, a graduating law student, was wounded and is being treated in hospital.
In Chino Gaston’s report on “24 Oras,” tricycle driver Jun (not his real name) said he saw Bandiala trying to stop Yumol as the suspect tried to leave by the school’s pedestrian gate on Katipunan Avenue.
The Quezon City Police District reports that Furigay has filed almost 70 complaints against Yumol.

He has been in the headlines ever since his name came forward as the shooting suspect of the massacre. Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol’s Lamitan clinic is shut down.
After almost immediately, he turns into a fervent opponent of the Furigays, accusing them of corruption and complicity in the local drug trade charges that the politicians vigorously refute.

Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol, who is the suspect in the shooting case of Furigay’s daughter’s graduation, hasn’t revealed if he has children of himself. Followingly, all of his family members have also stayed away from the media’s coverage at the moment.
The former mayor was assassinated alongside Lamitan city hall executive assistant Victor George Capistrano and Ateneo guard Jeneven Bandiala. The incident took place just before her daughter Hannah was set to graduate and receive her law degree on Sunday.
Hannah was injured in the shooting and was taken to the hospital, where she is currently being treated. The authorities have already arrested Chao.
Furigay had planned to leave politics and return to business after serving three consecutive terms as mayor of Lamitan.
